The shipwreck is thought to be that of the Swan, a small warship constructed in 1641, which was lost during Cromwell’s campaign to suppress Royalist support in the Highlands, especially during an attempt to seize Duart Castle (NM73NW 1), the stronghold of Clan Maclean.
