Forte Interrotto is a military barracks built in the 19th century and partially fortified into a fortress at the outbreak of World War I to defend the Italian border against the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The term “fort” is therefore improperly used and misleading, while the name Interrotto does not derive from the structure being unfinished, but rather from the name of the mountain on which it was built — Monte Interrotto (an Italianization of the Cimbrian word Hinterrucks, meaning “mountain located to the north”). The fortification stands at an altitude of 1,392 meters and is located in the municipality of Asiago.
