Agisoft MetsShape has had the option to export Tiled Models for a long time. This is a writeup on how to export the Tiled Model from MetaShape so you can work with it on the Construkted Reality platform.
Exporting a Tiled Model creates a file format which is conducive to streaming the 3d data over the web.

The three big advantages of uploading data in this format to Construkted Reality are:

  1. You can upload models of unlimited number of polygons to Construkted Reality.
  2. No processing on our end. Your model will appear as seen in MetaShape software.
  3. Because of the lack of processing on our end, your models will be available and ready to share faster.

If you’re using Metashape v2.1 and higher, see this blog post instead, as the export options have changed in Metashape.

Process your model

First, align your images. Creating a 3d Model is optional (as a Tiled Model is what we are after) but you will likely create one anyway to see what your captured data looks like.

The next step is to build a Tiled Model.

Our recommendations:

  • Source data as ‘Depth maps’ unless you already have a mesh model. If you already have a mesh you want to use, select ‘Mesh’ for this option.
  • Quality refers to the mesh generation process. This is the same setting as is available in Build Mesh process. The higher the setting the more detailed the results, at the expense of longer compute time.
  • Pixel size (m) refers to the texture resolution. The displayed number is the size of one pixel given the input images. For best display quality keep the suggested number.
  • Tile size should be left at 256 for best display quality on Construkted Reality.
  • Face count per Mpx should be kept on high for best display quality on Construkted Reality.

Exporting from Metashape

The next step is to export the Tiled Model before uploading.

From the Save dialog box, choose “Cesium 3D Tiles (*.zip)” as the file type. This option will generate a zip file which you can directly upload to Construkted Reality

After the file dialog, you will be prompted with another window. For texture format select “KTX 2.0” instead of “JPEG”.
(This option is only available in version 1.84 and higher of Metashape)

KTX is a new image compression format which will reduce the file size by anywhere from 5% to 20% better then JPEG, depending on how highly detailed your texture is.

This results in a faster loading of the 3D tiles when viewing them on Construkted Reality.

Upload to Construkted Reality

Once you have the zip file, the next step is to upload it Construkted Reality.
On the upload page select 3D tile and your model will be available for viewing shortly after uploading.

Notes

If your data is geo-referenced inside of Metashape, the 3D Tile output will also be geo-referenced in Construkted Reality.

If your model does not show up or shows up high above the ground, you will need to adjust the asset’s elevation inside Construkted Reality to place it on top of the terrain.

If you don’t want your data to show up geo-referenced in Construkted Reality, then you can turn off the display of the virtual globe on the Construkted Reality platform.
